Treatment

Created by New York City teenagers in the New Media Arts Apprenticeship program at the Educational Video Center (EVC), Bridging the Gap: Community and Police Justice is an interactive community website exploring the recent deaths of unarmed citizens of color at the hands of law enforcement while promoting dialogue between the youth, community and the police.  We aim to bridge the gap between community relations and police and encourage policing and public safety practices based on cooperation and trust with community members. New York City needs a different approach to policing, one based on cooperation and respect for communities – not on targeting and harassment.

Using EVC's youth docs on police brutality entitled, Life Under Suspicion (2012) and To Protect and Serve (1991), we ground the viewer in community history which is one of the goals of this program.  We've heard from community leaders, activists, organizers and the justice community. Based from our research, we feel all voices are a much-needed part of the conversation and the solution in order for healing to take place in our communities.
